Me and my friend, (we are both girls), are looking up hostels in Rome Italy. The cheapest one are mixed hostels, but IDK how I feel about staying with strange men.
I'm just curious to know of any girls staying in a mixed hostel and did you feel it was safe?

While most HI hostels have single sex dorms, by no means all.
Other hostels more often have mixed dorms.
I have been the only female in a mostly male dorm, many times even, the guys are better room mates than the girls in all female dorms, most of the time.
Many hostels will give you the option, male, mixed or female, and only when they run out of places in single sex offering places in mixed only. Couples traveling together and mixed groups of friends will stay in the mixed dorms, while solo travelers use the single sex rooms. Works well in most places. Specially where the dorm sizes are pretty small.
As you travel with a female friend, you will never be the only girl in a mixed dorm, so even less to worry about.
