What are the reasons a person believes in a particular religion?

I've been thinking about this recently, is one of the main reasons a person believes (I'm not trying to stereotype but really) in a religion because of where they live and how they were raised? I mean think about it. India there is Hindu, Japan and China there is buddhism, southern parts of America there's Christianity, Spain and Italy there's roman catholic. All of this spurs from years ago, centuries of traditions being passed down. Could religion just be another tradition? Do some people just embrace it because it is a tradition and they want to immerse themselves in their culture? Are religions just a set of rules groups of people made that would potentially solve the mysteries of this world and create peace? Noticing all of the similiarities between almost ALL religions, with no murder, no hatred, showing kindness, loving the world, etc. Aren't these things we should do just in general? We shouldn't believe in a god because we're scared of going to hell. Just wondering if these reasons make up why people choose to believe in their religion.

On the whole, your assumptions are correct. There are many exceptions, however. I think it ultimately comes down to what really makes sense to each person.
